Journey to the center of the earth
Elihes Artas Cave

The cave of Elihes Artas, whose name derives from the imposing holm oaks under which its entrance opens, is a threshold into underground Sardinia, rich in precious ecosystems and breathtaking landscapes. This cavity, located on the Supramonte of Oliena in the locality of Pala de Tingiosu, offers access to a secret world through a short but inviting vertical entrance that leads to vast internal environments studded with exceptional limestone concretions.

Inside, the environment is maintained at an almost constant temperature throughout the year, making it an ideal destination in both hot and cold periods. The short approach route and the large interior spaces, which are easily covered on foot, allow access even to non-experts, at least for the initial part of the site; however, great care is required, especially on the way out, when retracing the vertical stretch backwards.

The long roots of the holm oaks that cross the ceiling and hang in the void, some of which have now become rock concretions, contribute to the impression of being inside a fairytale place.

Caving exploration, reserved only for experts with equipment, offers small but fun challenges, some of which are facilitated by fixed ropes, which contribute to making the experience even more intriguing. The last room, in particular, is truly unforgettable because of the numerous concretions and the extraordinary ‘forest’ of petrified roots.
