The rumble announcing the flood
Sa Ohe Cave

Sa Ohe Cave is a natural wonder set among high vertical walls, yews, maples and centuries-old junipers. It is part of an extensive karstic complex that links it to the Su Ventu cave, with a development of about 20 km (among the largest in Europe and still being explored) and a particular characteristic: a deafening roar announces the arrival of the waters just before the underground flood.

For this reason, some have believed that its name was connected to the concept of ‘voice’, while it is more likely that the Sardinian word, in the Olianese variant ohe, refers to the fact that this cavity is a kind of ‘mouth’, the final part of an underground watercourse.

The cave – located on the northern slope of the Supramonte of Oliena, not far from the Lanaitho valley – has an entrance at about 150 meters above sea level that leads to a large space embellished by the presence of three small internal lakes.

Stalactites, stalagmites, tunnels and sharp crystals covering the ground provide a backdrop of impressive beauty where underground lakes and quartz sand beaches give the idea of having been, literally, transported to another world.
